Moving Violations and Insurance Premiums

All drivers are afraid of being pulled over by the police. However, most people are more concerned with the effect that a ticket will have on their insurance than the actual fine they will have to pay.

Sadly, these fears are justified. Moving violations can have huge impacts on the amount that you have to pay for car insurance. So just how much will your insurance premium increase? An InsuranceQuotes.com study shows that a single moving violation can make a really big difference in your insurance rates.

Which Moving Violations Had the Biggest Effect on Insurance Premiums?

The study looked at the national average increase in insurance premiums from a single moving violation in different categories.  Not surprising, getting caught driving under the influence caused the biggest increase in insurance rates. Other behaviors leading to large rate hikes included reckless driving and excessive speeding (driving more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit).

Some violations (seatbelt violations and driving without a license, for example), however, did relatively little to premiums. For example, driving without a seatbelt only raised rates by about 6 percent. This is a far cry from the 92% increase from drunk driving!

Are These Increases for Moving Violations Justified?

The whole purpose behind increasing the amount that you have to pay for car insurance is that you pose a great risk to the insurance company. In other words, you do things that could make it more likely that you will get in an accident and make them have to pay more money if somebody makes a claim against you.

Clearly, a hefty rate increase is justified for drivers who are caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is some of the riskiest behavior and can lead to catastrophic injuries and huge damages.

On the other end of the spectrum, it is odd that not wearing a seatbelt leads to the smallest increase in insurance rates.  This is particularly shocking when you consider that more than half of the fatalities in a recent Louisiana study involved vehicle occupants who were not properly wearing their seatbelts.

That being said, whether you agree with the study or not, traffic tickets can be very costly for drivers.  This should provide an added incentive for drivers to obey the traffic laws and operate their vehicles safely.
