One person was killed and three others were injured in an offshore Louisiana rig explosion occurring on November 20, 2014.
The explosion, which was reported a little before 3 p.m. in the afternoon, happened on the Echo Platform located off of the Louisiana coast. The platform was operated by Fieldwood Energy, a Houston-based company. The injured workers were employed by Turnkey Cleaning Services and were cleaning a heater-treater (a piece of equipment that separates oil from other liquids) at the time of the explosion.
The three injured workers received treatment at an onshore medical facility. While details are scarce, the company has reported that one of the injuries is serious.
The platform was not in operation at the time of the explosion, and thankfully, there has reportedly been no pollution caused by the incident.
The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time. The matter is being investigated by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (part of the United States Department of the Interior), along with the Coast Guard.
Recent Offshore Louisiana Explosion
This tragic incident follows a similar offshore Louisiana explosion that occurred in September. That incident, which also killed one person, happened on a Chevron natural gas pipeline off of the Louisiana coast.
