Two workers were killed and many more were injured in an offshore maintenance platform accident off of the coast of Mexico yesterday. The offshore maintenance platform was in the process of setting up to perform maintenance work for wells attached to the Caan Alf platform in the Bay of Campeche. The accident is being blamed on the collapse of one of the platform’s legs, which made it list to one side.
The exact number of injuries is unclear at this early stage, but local media has reported that nearly 30 were hurt in the accident. In addition to the death and injury toll, around 100 workers were evacuated following the incident.
The platform, the Troll Solution rig, was contracted to operate in Pemex’s Abkatun-Pol-Chuc oilfield. The platform was operated by Typhoon Offshore, a company owned by Mexican conglomerate Grupo Salinas.
Although the platform is still leaning into the sea, it has reportedly not compromised the integrity of any wells in the area or affected production. Early reports also indicate that there was no oil spill caused by the offshore maintenance platform accident.
Offshore Maintenance Platform Accident Just One More Problem for Pemex
This accident comes about a month after a separate Pemex platform fire cost four workers their lives. Unlike yesterday’s incident, production in Pemex’s field was substantially impaired by the earlier platform fire. Indeed, it is estimated that the platform fire could potentially cost up to $780 million in losses.
Even before the platform fire, Pemex was still dealing with a whole host of problems. For one thing, it has had multiple accidents in the past few years that have caused significant injury and death tolls. It has also been the victim of a massive theft of around $1 billion worth of gasoline from its pipelines.
