Studies Show a Decline in Fatal Truck Accidents

Everywhere you go on the road, you see 18 wheelers, tractor-trailers, and other large commercial trucks. This is especially true when you travel on the interstate for long drives. These vehicles serve an important function but can also be the cause of serious, and at times fatal, accidents.

Truck accidents can happen because of distracted driving or because truck drivers have simply been on the road for too long. As far as being on the road for too long is concerned, the government recently passed regulations that establishes maximum hour requirements for truck drivers in the hope of reducing the risk of truck accidents.

Unfortunately, studies show that this has not yet been successful.

Study Shows Decline in Fatal Truck Accidents

A recent study shows that truck accident deaths declined between 2013 and 2014. Some might look at this statistic and argue that the truck driver hourly restrictions (which had its final compliance date in mid 2013) are responsible for the decrease.

But, even though the number of fatalities decreased during that time period, the overall number of large truck accident injuries actually increased. Making matters more complicated, the rate of involvement of large trucks in injury crashes went up by 21 percent.

Regardless of whether the numbers show a positive or a negative trend, the fact remains that large truck accidents can prove to be fatal. Drivers should always be careful when encountering large truck drivers on the road by understanding that they have limited visibility and that even a minimal impact can lead to a fatal crash.
